Jazz Fest 2026: Budget Guide to Hotels, Food & Getting Around New Orleans

New Orleans French Quarter street with musicians

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival is one of the best music festivals in the country, and it is not just jazz. Blues, gospel, R&B, rock, Cajun, zydeco, and everything in between spread across 14 stages over two weekends. The food alone is worth the trip. But New Orleans during Jazz Fest is expensive if you wing it. Here is how to plan it on a budget.

Budget Hotels During Jazz Fest

Hotel prices in New Orleans spike hard during Jazz Fest. French Quarter rooms that normally run $120/night jump to $250+. Even Mid-City hotels near the Fair Grounds see significant markups.

Your best budget options:

  • Mid-City / Gentilly area: Closest to the Fair Grounds. Budget motels and smaller hotels in this corridor run $85–$140/night during Fest. You can walk to the gates in 10–15 minutes.
  • Airport corridor (Kenner/Metairie): Hotels along Airline Highway and near Louis Armstrong Airport regularly run $70–$110/night. The Jazz Fest Express shuttle has a pickup nearby, or you can rideshare for $15–$20 to the Fair Grounds.
  • Uptown / Garden District: Slightly cheaper than the Quarter and closer to the Uptown shuttle pickup at the Hyatt Regency.

Book early. Jazz Fest hotels sell out months in advance, especially for Weekend 1.

Budget Food & Restaurants

The food inside Jazz Fest is legendary — and surprisingly affordable compared to the rest of New Orleans.

Inside the Fair Grounds (under $10):

  • Vaucresson's hot sausage po-boy — $10, a Jazz Fest staple since the early days
  • Cajun jambalaya (Catering Unlimited) — $9.50
  • Falafel sandwich (Mona's) — $9
  • Vegan gumbo (TCA Brocato's) — $9
  • Crawfish bread — around $10, one of the most popular items at the fest

Outside the Fair Grounds:

  • Liuzza's By The Track (1518 N Lopez St): Right near the Fair Grounds. Their famous BBQ shrimp po-boy is $16.95, gumbo runs about $10. This place gets packed during Fest — expect a line.
  • Brooks Seahorse Saloon (across from Fair Grounds): Burgers, chicken tenders, salmon tacos. Most items $8–$14.
  • Jockey's Pub & Sports Bar (near Fair Grounds): $5 Margaritas on Saturdays, cheap drinks all week.

Parking

There is no general public parking at the Fair Grounds. On-site parking is only available with VIP packages.

Jazz Fest Express Shuttle — the best option. Round-trip shuttle from 4 locations:

  1. French Quarter: Steamboat Natchez Dock, 400 Toulouse St
  2. Downtown: Sheraton Hotel, 500 Canal St
  3. Uptown/CBD: Hyatt Regency, 601 Loyola Ave
  4. City Park area: Wisner Parking Lot, near 5700 Wisner Blvd

Four-day shuttle pass: $96. Daily round-trip tickets available at departure points. The shuttle is the only one that drops you off inside the festival gates. Runs 10:30 AM–7:30 PM.

Budget alternative: Exit via the Gentilly gate, walk 3 blocks to Broad St at D'Abadie St, and catch the NORTA RTA #9 bus for $1.25 one way.

Rideshare from the French Quarter to Fair Grounds runs about $12–$20 normally, but surge pricing after the fest ends can push it to $30–$50. If you are driving to nearby streets, use PayByPhone for metered spots and book garage parking in advance through SpotHero or ParkWhiz to lock in lower rates.

Weather

New Orleans in late April through early May is warm and increasingly humid. Expect highs of 78–84°F and lows around 60–65°F. Average rainfall is about 4 inches for April, spread across roughly 6 rainy days. By late April, the muggy summer heat is starting to creep in.

What to pack: Lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing. A wide-brimmed hat for sun protection — there is very little shade at the Fair Grounds. Sunscreen (SPF 30+). A compact rain poncho (umbrellas are bulky in crowds and may be restricted). Comfortable shoes that can handle mud — if it rains, the Fair Grounds turn into a swamp. Bring a bandana or cooling towel.

Safety & Risks

  • Dehydration and heat: The #1 medical issue at Jazz Fest. Drink water constantly. Free water refill stations are available throughout the grounds.
  • Pickpockets: Crowded stages are prime territory. Use a crossbody bag or fanny pack. Leave valuables at the hotel.
  • Surge pricing: Rideshare prices after the fest ends (around 7 PM) are insane. Take the shuttle or walk to the NORTA bus.
  • Cash vs. card: Most food vendors inside the fest accept both, but having cash speeds things up and avoids minimum-charge issues.
  • Street scams: Outside the fest, the usual New Orleans tourist scams apply — the shoe shine trick, "I bet I know where you got your shoes," and fake ticket sellers near the gates.
  • Mud: If it rains during Fest, bring shoes you don't mind ruining. Flip-flops and nice sneakers are a mistake.

For getting around New Orleans beyond the fest, Uber and Lyft are widely available, or ride the iconic NORTA streetcar for $1.25 per trip.
